Michelangelo Drawings

In Social Studies, we have been studying the 1500s and European discovery of the Americas. To go along with this unit, we are also looking at some famous artists, scientists, mathematicians, explorers, and church leaders. On Thursday, we studied Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. We discussed how many pieces of art from that time period were based off of the Bible. We also looked at their most famous paintings, including the Sistine Chapel. After explaining how Michelangelo had to paint the ceiling, the students got to try their own hand at drawing with their work above them. We taped their papers to the bottom of their desks, and they had to chose a scene from the Bible to draw. After one minute working, one student commented, "If I were Michelangelo, I would quit on the first day!" They all enjoyed this activity, even though it left their arms very tired and left them feeling frustrated that their work didn't look as good as it would if they had drawn normally.

In Social Studies and Writing, the students are also working on writing paragraphs about a specific person from the 1500s. If it was not their turn to draw, they were writing and editing with friends. Writing paragraphs is extremely difficult for my students.

It is a continual struggle for my students to work well together and treat each other with respect. In Bible, we moved onto Joshua. I am trying to focus on how being a leader and doing the right thing is difficult, but God continually reminded Joshua to "be strong and courageous." Please pray for them as they learn some of these difficult lessons.

Prayer Requests and Praises

-I was approved for a work visa!
-There are still a few more things I need for my work visa before I can pick it up while I'm home at Christmas. Remain in prayer for these things.
-Work visas for my teammates.
-My students as they learn about friendships and respect
-We found toilet paper yesterday! Just as my friends were getting low, we spotted some people walking down the street with some. After asking where they got it, we ran to the store. The first store was out already. It was such a tease as the people walking around the store still had it in their carts, but then we found a second store that still had some left. This was the first time we found some in quite a few weeks.
-My students spiritual lives.
-Continuing to find food (flour, eggs, milk, sugar) and essentials we need. There are so many shortages before the holidays.
-More monthly and quarterly supporters.
-I bought tickets to go home this summer, which is actually cheaper than staying here!
-That we would be refunded for the plane tickets to Curacao when the company no longer flies to Venezuela or Curacao
-Continued health for everyone. Many people are beginning to get sick.
-That my friend's leg surgery on Tuesday would go smoothly and that she will heal quickly.
-Continued rest and strength for myself and my teammates.

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
