100th Day, Read-a-thon, Bible Club, and My First Hike on the Avila

This week was another busy week with lots of special events. February 4 was our 100th Day of school. My class celebrated in math class with some 100 activities. First, they built things out of 100 pattern blocks and then came up with what fraction and decimal they had of the different colors. Then, they found 100 ways to make 100 using different operations.

Friday was the kick-off of Read-a-thon, which is a two week push for reading that our school does. We started with a school-wide meeting (everyone fit in our music room), where we had a skit, read a book, and introduced the reading  competition. Outside of school, kids are encouraged to read more. My fourth graders' goal is 50 minutes every weeknight (450 minutes total). The fifth graders need to read 60 minutes every weeknight (540 minutes total). Many of my kids set personal goals for 1,000 minutes by the end of Read-a-thon. If they reach the goal at the end, they will receive a donut. If our class reaches our class goal of 7,000 minutes, we will have a party. During school, we will also be doing special things like having a snuggle up and read day, reading with the secondary students, and doing two author studies.

Friday after school, we had Bible Club again. This week, we learned about the boots of the gospel of peace. They learned that God loves them, and accepting Him as their Savior will give them peace. For craft, we painted their feet into a shape of a heart. The younger kids really enjoyed it!

This second grader was very ticklish!

Finally, this weekend I went for my first hike on the Avila. I've seen this mountain every day from my house, and now I've finally stepped foot on it! We went up the mountain for about an hour. Then, we took a shorter hike to a waterfall.  I'm looking forward to going back soon and trying some of the other hikes.
